5 Signs Your Old Gold Jewellery Deserves a Second Life (Not the Bin)

5 October 2026

Almost everyone has a bit of forgotten jewellery somewhere — a tangled chain, a single earring, a ring from a relationship long finished. It's easy to assume it's worthless, or too much hassle to deal with. But gold doesn't tarnish, wear out or go off, and a piece that's been sat in a drawer for years is still worth exactly what its metal is worth today. Here are five signs it's time to dig it out.

1. It's broken, bent or missing a stone

A snapped chain, a bent ring or a bracelet with a broken clasp feels like it belongs in the bin. It doesn't. When gold is bought for its metal content, condition barely matters — what counts is the weight and the purity. Broken pieces are priced just the same as perfect ones, so that tangled mess at the bottom of the jewellery box may be worth more than you'd guess.

2. You only have one of a pair

Single earrings are the classic drawer casualty. The other one fell down the back of a sofa years ago, and the survivor has been waiting ever since for its partner to turn up. Realistically, it isn't going to. A lone gold earring is still gold, and it can be sold or reused just like anything else made from the metal.

3. It doesn't fit, or it's just not your style any more

Plenty of good jewellery goes unworn simply because it's gone out of fashion, no longer fits, or was a gift you never really loved. If you haven't worn it in years, it's probably not going to start now. Turning it into cash — or having the metal reused — is far better than letting it sit idle.

4. It belonged to someone else

Inherited jewellery can be an emotional one. Some pieces are keepsakes you'll treasure forever, and that's completely fair. But often a collection gets passed down that nobody actually wears, and sentimental guilt keeps it locked away. There's no pressure either way — keep what means something to you, and consider whether the rest could do more good as cash or as a new lease of life for someone else.

5. You've no idea what it's made of

Plenty of people assume a piece is "just costume" when it's actually gold or silver — and the other way round. Hallmarks are tiny and easy to miss, and the only way to be sure is to have it properly tested. We scan every item with an XRF machine, which measures the metal's purity without scratching it or using acid, so you'll know exactly what you've got. If it isn't gold, silver or platinum, we'll simply tell you.

"But is it really worth the trip?"

It's the question we hear most. People worry that a few odd bits won't be worth the bother, or that they'll feel awkward turning up with a sandwich bag of tangled chains. Don't. We see everything from a single earring to a carrier bag of inherited jewellery, and nobody's judging. Gold prices move, so the value of your pieces today is simply whatever the live price says it is — and the quickest way to find out is to bring them in and watch them being weighed and scanned. It takes minutes, it costs nothing, and you're free to walk away with your jewellery if the price isn't right for you.

Why reusing gold matters

Mining gold is one of the most resource-hungry, environmentally damaging industries around. Because gold never degrades, it can be melted down and reused again and again without losing quality. Every old ring or chain that goes back into circulation means a little less new gold needs to be dug out of the ground. It's the original form of recycling — and it pays you back.
